The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has warned officers against illegal detention
This was made known in a statement by Muyiwa Adejobi, the Force spokesman, on Sunday
The IGP said there was a legally stipulated period for detentions, citing sections 34 and 35 of the Constitution which guaranteed the right to dignity and personal liberty
He cautioned against any practice that may lead to unlawful or prolonged detentions, which could undermine public trust and confidence in the police
The police chief reiterated that any officer found violating those principles will face major consequences,
According to him, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) is ready to build stronger relationships with the communities it serves, ensuring that policing was carried out with integrity
