U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to begin dismantling the Department of Education, fulfilling a campaign promise.
Trump criticized the department for its “failures” and plans to return control of education funds to the states. While fully shutting down the department requires congressional approval, Trump vowed to act swiftly to reduce its influence.
The move has already faced legal challenges and criticism from education advocates. The administration may cut parts of the department within legal limits, and some of its functions could be transferred to other federal agencies.
Trump also praised Linda McMahon, the department’s head, and announced efforts to shrink the workforce. Critics argue the move could harm programs that support low-income students and those with disabilities.
