A US federal judge has ordered the reinstatement of thousands of probationary federal employees who were recently fired by the Trump administration.
Judge William Alsup ruled that the mass firings, which affected workers across several government departments, were part of a “sham” to bypass proper legal procedures.
The Department of Justice defended the firings, claiming they were based on guidance from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), but the judge rejected this argument, citing evidence that OPM instructed the terminations.
The White House criticized the ruling, with the press secretary, Karoline Leavitt accusing the judge of overstepping his authority and interfering with the president’s power to manage federal workers.
The Trump administration then vowed to fight the decision.
