The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, the 12th of June as a public holiday to mark this year’s Democracy Day.
In a statement issued a little over an hour ago, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, congratulated Nigerians on the occasion.
He advised Nigerians to reflect on the efforts of the founding fathers and ensure that the country remains a united, secured, peaceful and indivisible entity.
The Minister who also urged Nigerians to remain steadfast on the tenets of democratic governance – reiterated President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to positive reforms which would revive the nation’s economy and enhance security.
Nigeria returned to the path of democracy from military rule on the 29th of May 1999, a day that was initially Nigeria celebrated as Democracy Day every year until in 2018, when the President Muhammadu Buhari administration moved Democracy Day from May 29 to June 12 in honour of one of the national heroes for democracy, Chief M.K.O Abiola
