More than 20 people have lost their lives in a boat accident that occurred around Anyiin, River Benue, in Taraba State. Taraba State Water Transportation Chairman, Alhaji Jidda Suleiman who confirmed the incident yesterday said the boat was conveying fishermen from Wukari local government areas of Taraba en route to Kwara state.

According to him, 12 people out of the dead bodies are from Ibi, while some are from Gindin Doruwa town in Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State.

 

While lamenting over the unfortunate incident, Alhaji Suleiman said it was a tradition for fishermen from Taraba to travel to Cameroon, Chad, and other places to fish till August of the following year. He further called on the state and Federal Government to provide life jackets as it would help avert similar incidents.

The boat mishap came barely a week after a similar incident that claimed several lives in Karim-Lamido Local Government Area of the state.

Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, has condoled with families of victims of the boat accident in the Ibi Local Government Area of the state. This was revealed yesterday by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Digital Communication, Emmanuel Bello.

 

He said the governor described the incident as worrisome since it came barely a week after a similar incident that claimed several lives in Karim-Lamido Local Government Area of the state.

While praying to God to grant the souls of the departed eternal rest, governor Kefas said the state government was already working out modalities to end future occurrences of boat mishaps in Taraba
