The Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, has said there is a need for a total overhaul of Nigeria’s higher education system to bring the country’s universities and other tertiary institutions at par with others around the globe.

He stated this yesterday while declaring open the 8th edition of the “Libsense” Open Science Symposium.

Professor Mamman who was represented by the Director of University Education, Mrs Rakiya Ilyasu, said higher education institutions in the country are facing several challenges.

He listed some of the challenges to include inadequate funding, corruption, inadequate infrastructural facilities, shortage of academic staff, strike actions, brain-drain, poor research, weak governance, and insecurity, among others.

The Minister noted that Higher education is designed to produce manpower for the social, economic, and technological development of the country, hence the total overhaul agenda.

Professor Mamman added that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is determined to address the challenges in the education sector.
