The Niger State Government has announced a donation of N1 billion as intervention fund in the wake of the recent flood disaster in the Mokwa Local Government Area of the State.
Governor Umaru Bago announced the donation during his visit to the temporary camp at Tiffin Mazza Primary School, where hundreds of internally displaced persons (IDPs) are currently seeking shelter
According to the governor, aside from the donation, fifty trucks of assorted grains would be arriving in due course – to support victims of the flood.
To further boost regional infrastructure and ensure safer mobility, the governor announced the award of the Mokwa-Raba Road project, including the construction of four new bridges, at the cost of ₦7 billion.
He explained that the project would ease movement, improve local commerce, and prevent a situation where residents would be completely cut-off should a similar flooding occur in future
Governor Bago also cautioned residents against building on waterways, warning that such practices contribute to the severity of flood disasters.
He said the Ministry of Lands has been directed to issue a Certificate of Occupancy to the Federal Government to facilitate the permanent resettlement of affected persons.
While the current IDP camp remains a temporary arrangement until the end of the month, the governor assured that each displaced family will receive financial assistance for rent as they await the completion of permanent housing.
