More than 200 inmates have escaped from a prison in Karachi, Pakistan, following panic triggered by multiple earthquake tremors
Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said 216 prisoners fled early Tuesday morning, with 87 recaptured and one inmate confirmed dead.
He added that the province’s prison chief has been dismissed over the incident.
Authorities have urged those still at large to surrender.
The escape comes amid concerns over overcrowding and poor prison conditions in Pakistan.
Over 20 tremors have been recorded in Karachi in the past three days, according to the Sindh Meteorology Office.
