The Ondo State Police Command has dismissed reports alleging that a vehicle from the convoy of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, was involved in the death of a young girl in Akure on Thursday.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the First Lady was in Ondo State to kick off the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Programme and distribute 10,000 professional kits, including Crocs and scrubs, to midwives in the South-West region.

Police spokesperson DSP Olufunmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya addressed the incident in a statement, clarifying that the claim originally published by Sahara Reporters was false and misleading.

She explained that investigations and eyewitness reports confirmed the accident was caused by a hit-and-run driver in an unregistered white Lexus, not by any vehicle in the First Lady’s convoy.

A witness who saw the accident reportedly chased the fleeing car on a motorcycle after the crash, which took place in the Oba-Ile area of Akure. Several others, including the victim’s parents, corroborated the witness account.

Additionally, the police corrected the age of the child, saying she was seven years old, not nine as reported by Sahara Reporters. The Commissioner of Police has since visited the grieving family and assured them of a full and transparent investigation.

The police emphasized once again that the First Lady’s convoy had no involvement in the tragic incident.
