The Federal Government has taken a bold step to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on food imports by inaugurating an Interministerial Committee on Research and Innovation.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, who launched the committee at the State House in Abuja, tasked members with slashing the country’s import bills by 50 percent. He says this move is part of President Bola Tinubu’s plan to build a trillion-dollar, innovation-driven economy within the next decade.

The committee will focus on five key areas: agriculture and climate resilience, manufacturing, healthcare innovation, natural resource development, and energy security.

The Vice President stressed that the goal isn’t just numbers but real results that improve lives.

Minister of Innovation, Uche Nnaji, added that collaboration among ministries will cut waste and boost progress in critical sectors.

The committee’s work will lead up to an annual Presidential Innovation Plenary, led by President Tinubu himself, as part of a renewed national focus on research, development, and economic growth.
