The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has announced Nigeria’s efforts to meet global demands for lasting social development and justice.
He made the declaration at the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, on the topic Parliamentary Action for Social Development and Justice
Mr. Kalu cited the nation’s key legislative achievements in previous years, stating that they attest to Nigeria’s commitment to realizing its objectives.
He added that another major legislative measure was the new minimum wage bill, which, according to him, not only safeguards the rights of workers but also lays the foundation for a more dynamic and productive economy.
The Deputy Speaker further stated that the parliament had initiated a robust oversight function to ensure compliance, transparency, and accountability.
However, he expressed worry that Africa was burdened by a huge debt profile that strained its public finances, making it difficult to realize social development.
