Russian forces has launched a massive drone attack on Kharkiv late Wednesday, injuring nine people and causing significant damage in Ukraine’s second-largest city.

According to emergency services, the assault ignited four fires in the city center, with images shared on Telegram showing firefighters battling flames amid piles of rubble. Several buildings sustained serious damage in the strikes.

Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported at least 12 drone attacks on the city, which has been a frequent target due to its proximity—just 30 kilometers—from the Russian border.

Kharkiv, which resisted capture in the early weeks of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, has since endured repeated drone and missile strikes as Moscow shifted its military focus to eastern Ukraine.

Meanwhile, in central Ukraine, Dnipro regional governor Serhiy Lysak confirmed that a separate drone attack sparked fires in the city of Dnipro. However, no casualties were immediately reported there.
