The Federal government has set the record straight with regards to eligible beneficiaries of its planned electricity subsidy for certain Federal Institutions
In a statement issued at the weekend by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Power, Bolaji Tunji, the proposed subsidy which primarily targets public health facilities could be extended to 37 federal universities and seven teaching hospitals affiliated with some of them.
He said the initiative will be part of the federal government’s Energizing Education Programme (EEP) and only cover the essential services of the institutions.
The spokesman clarified that commercial entities and privately run businesses that charge customers for services rendered, would not benefit from the subsidy.
He said the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, had already requested accurate data from the institutions that would enjoy the subsidy.
The proposed subsidy is in response to increasing calls for assistance by universities and teaching hospitals that cannot cope with the charges demanded by electricity distribution companies
The proposed 50 per cent subsidy was first mentioned by the Minister of State for Health, Tunji Alausa, who announced it on Thursday at the National Neo-Psychiatric Hospital in Barnawa, Kaduna State.
