Authorities at Babcock University in Ogun State, have decried the “exorbitant” monthly electricity expenses incurred by the Institution owing to its Band A status
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Ademola Tayo, expressed concern over the development while speaking with Newsmen on Sunday during the University’s 22nd undergraduate and 13th postgraduate convocation
According to him, the university paid N300 million to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) in May after the increase in tariff of electricity consumers on Band A.
The Professor of Development Education pleaded with the government to review the electricity tariff of institutions of higher learning as education remains crucial for economic growth and development.
Recall that similar calls have been made in recent weeks by other Institutions across the country.
Authorities at the College of Medicine of the University of Lagos (CMUL) and the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) also cried out over what they described as outrageous electricity bills handed down by Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC)
In reaction to the complaints, the House of Representatives had asked the federal government to remove all universities from the Band A electricity tariff plan
It remains to be seen if the request would be granted
