Amnesty International has warned against threatening aggrieved citizens ahead of next week’s planned protest; warning that such move does not augur well for democracy.
The Chairman of Amnesty International in Nigeria, Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, who made the call at the weekend, commended security agencies for conducting themselves professionally thus far
He called on the government and security agencies to provide security cover for protesters to avoid a situation whereby hoodlums could take advantage of the situation.
Since the planned protest tagged ‘End bad governance in Nigeria’ started gaining traction on social media, many top government officials have advised against the demonstrations, arguing that the protest could be hijacked by hoodlums.
They urged citizens to have faith in the current administration, noting that the President was committed to addressing the welfare and concerns of Nigerians.
Despite the calls, protesters appear hell-bent on taking to the streets to register their grievances over high cost of living, poverty and worsening inflation figures among other economic indices.
Popular social media personality, Martins Vincent Itself, popularly known as Very Dark Man, might have started the protest earlier than scheduled as he registered his grievance in a public space earlier today in Abuja, the Nation’s Capital
