Tripartite Committee on Minimum Wage to Reconvene Amidst Stalemate, Labour Leaders Threaten Nationwide Strike | Search Media

The Tripartite Committee on Minimum Wage is expected to reconvene on Tuesday, the 23rd of May for further talks on arriving at an acceptable new minimum wage for workers.

This development which comes on the backdrop of a botched meeting earlier in the week – is prompted by an invitation letter sent to the labour leaders by the chairman of the committee, Bukar Goni.

According to him, other members of the committee have agreed to shift grounds from the N48,000 proposal which was rejected on Wednesday.

The letter appealed to the labour leaders to speak to their members and attend the reconvened meeting next Tuesday.

The organised labour comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) are proposing a new minimum wage of N615,000, which is way higher than the N48,000 proposal put forward by government.

After dumping Wednesday’s talks, labour leaders addressed a press conference where they expressed their anger over the offer.

They blamed the government and the private sector for the breakdown in negotiation and threatened that should the Federal Government fail to present a nationally acceptable minimum wage to Nigerians by the 31st of May, workers would embark on a Nationwide strike
