The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to embark on yet another round of strike, should the present administration fail to pay lecturers withheld salaries.

Issuing the warning on Thursday during a chat with Newsmen, ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke described as unfair – government’s refusal to pay lecturers four months of their 2022 withheld salaries and hold on to the remaining three-and-half months salaries

He argued that public universities in the country have so far covered the work for the period that they were on strike in 2022 and should be duly paid.

The ASUU president regretted that many lecturers were leaving the country because they they were not well remunerated.

The ASUU President consequently gave the Federal Government two weeks to pay the outstanding arrears and re-constitute Governing Councils across varsities to avoid the proposed strike

Recall that in 2022, academic and non-academic unions in Nigeria embarked on a lengthy strike to press home some of their demands including a better welfare package.

The administration of then President Muhammadu Buhari subsequently invoked a ‘no work, no pay policy’ against the unions but President Bola Tinubu, in October 2023, approved the release of four of the about eight months withheld salaries to lecturers while non-academic staff are yet to receive any payments
